The world monuments watch is a flagship advocacy program of the world monuments fund (WMF). It started its operation in 1995 in response to increasing threats to cultural heritage sites across the globe.
Announced every two year, the world monuments watch list of 100 most endangered sites calls international attention to the cultural heritage sites around the world threatened by factors such as neglect, vandalism, armed conflict or natural disasters. Since its inception 481 sites in 109 countries have been included in the watch list (selected from over 1,500 nominations).
Srinagar city has been placed in the watch list of 100 most endangered sites across the world. A WMF Watch List nomination will help focusing the international as well as local attention towards wanton destruction of the city's built heritage.
It will also generate awareness among public and private institutions for appropriate interventions in restoration and conservation of buildings, precincts, and historic landscapes. |
