Founded by King Pravarasena-ll over 1500 years ago, Srinagar has a long history, dating back, at least, to the 3rd century BC. Dotted with some of the most scenic and beautiful places, Srinagar has always been on of the major heritage destinations of the Indian subcontinent. But what really sets it apart is the fact that very few cities bear testimony to their past with as much authenticity as Srinagar.
Shehar-i-Kashmir, the two volumn publication presents the mapping of the architectural and cultural assets of the city of Srinagar, capturing the medieval world charm of hte city. The book includes the following:
- Geographic and socio-cultural history of Kashmir.
- Evolution of the Srinagar city, settlement pattern and city life.
- Monumental, Colonial and Vernacular architectural traditions of the region along with various building typologies.
- Decorative and architectural elements that define Kashmiri architecture, along with pictures.
- Architectural and historical description, condition assessment and grading o more than 800 listed properties and percints with photographs of religious, residential, civic, public, natural and manmade sites including the historic Mughal gardens.
The book also includes tables on major socio-cultural events of the city, man-made and natural disasters, as well as residential neighborhoods associated with different arts and crafts of Kashmir.
The listed properties in the book have been mapped on a heritage map for 130 sq. kms. of the historic city of Srinagar and its colonial extensions.
